Evolution aus Sicht der Religionen. Heute: Cthulhu.

Beide Seiten.

A couple weeks ago Louisiana passed a new science education act that promotes “critical thinking skills, logical analysis, and open and objective discussion of scientific theories being studied including, but not limited to, evolution, the origins of life, global warming, and human cloning.” Along with the regular textbook, the law states, teachers “may use supplemental textbooks and other instructional materials to help students understand, analyze, critique, and review scientific theories in an objective manner.” The law “shall not be construed to promote any religious doctrine, promote discrimination for or against a particular set of religious beliefs, or promote discrimination for or against religion or nonreligion.”
What the law does not make clear, however, is how schools will determine whether the extra instructional material is good science or nonsense. There is nothing in the law that would keep a teacher from introducing a bogus non-argument about gravity and the revolution of the planets.

On the basis that micro evolution was true he hypothesized that "macro” evolution or "molecules to man” evolution was also true. The textbook defines macro-evolution as “large scale evolutionary patterns and processes that occur over long periods time.” (Page 435) Macro-evolution could be said to occur if a dog became a cat or a dinosaur became a bird. It occurs at the genus or higher level (see text page 450) and implies that all life on Earth descended from a few types of cells that somehow came into being in the past. The diagram below should help you understand the differences in the two terms

Man
^^
MACRO-EVOLUTION can be considered to be VERTICAL (Has no proven examples.)
^^
Amoeba

<- MICRO-EVOLUTION can be considered to be HORIZONTAL ->

It is a change or adaptation at the species level. (Examples are the number of different types of: cats, dogs, cattle, birds, fish, etc.).

Based upon these definitions it is easy to see that micro-evolution is true but the truth of macroevolution has not been established since it has not been observed directly. Using the term "evolution" without specifying which type is being discussed is misleading and unfortunate and has caused much misunderstanding among scientists and the public. The term “macro” (molecules to man) evolution should be used in order to clarify the problem.

Even the 5% difference amounts to a staggering amount of information in the DNA. If the human and chimpanzee genomes are considered to have the same number of base pairs, (3,200,000,000) in spite of the chimp having 2 more chromosomes than the human and 10% more DNA, the 5% amounts to 150,000,000 bases. This is the amount of information contained in a book whose thickness is equivalent to about 30 books such as this textbook if it contained nothing but full pages of print from cover to cover. If this much information difference exists in the DNA between the chimpanzee and the human the difference between man’s ancestor and man must be much larger. It is completely inconceivable that this much coherent information could have been accidentally changed in the DNA of a member of the ape family to get man when the mutational problems discussed earlier are considered. If the transition from ape to man is to be accomplished by mutations, it is apparent that there should be plenty of fossil evidence. Where is the fossil evidence?

Think Critically: If the chimp has 10% more DNA than a human how can it be said that there is only a 5% difference? Which of the differences given above is the most reasonable?

There is much disagreement over whether or not “Lucy” is in the ancestral lineage of man. Many reputable paleontologists maintain that she is only a pygmy chimpanzee similar to ones alive today. Paleontologist Adrienne Zihlman, University of California at Santa Cruz says, "Lucy's fossil remains match remarkably well with the bones of a pygmy chimp." Evolutionists such as Charles Oxnard, Sir Solly Zuckerman, William L. Jungers, Jack T. Stern, Jr and Randall L. Susman all concur.

Solly Zuckerman attempted to prove with biometrical studies (based on measurements) that the australopithecines were apes. Zuckerman lost this debate in the 1950's, and his position was abandoned by everyone else (Johanson and Edey 1981). Creationists like to quote his opinions as if they were still a scientifically acceptable viewpoint.

Charles Oxnard (1975), in a paper that is widely cited by creationists, claimed, based on his multivariate analyses, that australopithecines are no more closely related, or more similar, to humans than modern apes are. Howell et al.(1978) criticized this conclusion on a number of grounds. Oxnard's results were based on measurements of a few skeletal bones which were usually fragmentary and often poorly preserved. The measurements did not describe the complex shape of some bones, and did not distinguish between aspects which are important for understanding locomotion from those which were not. Finally, there is "an overwhelming body of evidence", based on the work of nearly 30 scientists, which contradicts Oxnard's work. These studies used a variety of techniques, including those used by Oxnard, and were based on many different body parts and joint complexes. They overwhelmingly indicate that australopithecines resemble humans more closely than the living apes.
Und weiter unten:
Creationists are generally reluctant to accept that australopithecines, including Lucy, were bipedal. A statement by Weaver (1985) that "Australopithecus afarensis ... demonstrates virtually complete adaptation to upright walking" is dismissed by Willis (1987) as "a preposterous claim". Willis adds: "Many competent anthropologists have carefully examined these and other "Australopithicine" [sic] remains and concluded that Lucy could not walk upright."

Willis' evidence for this consists of a statement by Solly Zuckerman made in 1970; a 1971 statement from Richard Leakey that australopithecines "may have been knuckle-walkers", and a quote from Charles Oxnard about the relationship between humans, australopithecines and the apes. In fact, none of these quotes refer to Lucy. Two of them were made before Lucy, and A. afarensis, was even discovered (and the third was made very soon afterwards, before Lucy had been studied). [Anm.: Lucy wurde 1974 gefunden.]

Even in 1970, Zuckerman's views had long since been largely abandoned. In what is obviously a fabrication, Willis says that Leakey "referred to Lucy as an ape who did not walk upright", three years before Lucy was discovered. Leakey was merely making a suggestion (about robust australopithecines) which he soon retracted, not stating a firm opinion, and he has since stated (1994) that Lucy "undoubtedly was a biped". Oxnard (1975; 1987) has some unorthodox opinions about the australopithecines, but the Oxnard quote supplied by Willis discusses neither bipedality nor A. afarensis. Elsewhere in the same paper that Willis refers to, Oxnard (1975) repeatedly mentions that australopithecines may have been bipedal, and he has since stated (1987) that the australopithecines, including Lucy, were bipedal.

Fassen wir also zusammen:

Es gibt nämlich sogar einen Nature-Artikel von Zihlman zu dem Thema: Pygmy chimpanzee as a possible prototype for the common ancestor of humans, chimpanzees and gorillas [Nature 275, 744 - 746 (26 October 1978)].
A CONVINCING theory of human origins must clarify man's relationships with living primates and with the ancestral forms known only through fossils. Phylogenetic relationships have previously been determined mainly by anatomical similarities, but now, biochemical similarities provide independent criteria for evolutionary relationships. Albumin and transferrin immunology, immunodifrusion, DNA annealing and amino acid analysis all indicate that chimpanzees, gorillas and humans share a substantial common ancestry, and that the Asiatic apes (gibbons and orangutans) diverged earlier from this lineage. These findings directly conflict with the more widely held view that all the great apes diverged from a common ancestor long after the 'Origin' of the evolutionary line leading to modern humans4. The molecular data consistently suggest a much more recent origin of the man–chimpanzee–gorilla separation than was previously imagined, namely, in the range of 4–6 M yr ago. These data show that, although the two chimpanzee species (Pan paniscus and P. troglodytes) are biochemically distinct, they are more closely related to each other than either is to humans or gorillas. The chimpanzees speciated, then, after the initial three-way split. We therefore, here contend that, among living species, the pygmy chimpanzee (P. paniscus) offers us the best prototype of the prehominid ancestor. Biochemical, morphological, behavioural and palaeontological data support this proposition and argue for a relatively recent and accelerated divergence of the hominid from the pongid line.
Precise information about the bodily proportions of early hominids is crucial for accurate functional and phylogenetic interpretations of early human evolution. The partial skeleton of Australopithecus afarensis (AL 288-1; 'Lucy') recovered in 1974 from the Hadar area of Ethiopia9 permits the first direct assessment of body size, limb proportions and skeletal allometry in ancestral hominids that pre-date 3 Myr. Using allometric relationships for limb lengths in non-human catarrhine primates (as a whole and for African apes alone) as empirical base lines for comparison, I show here that the limb proportions of A. afarensis are clearly unique among hominoids. The data indicate that A. afarensis had already attained forelimb proportions similar to those of modern humans but possessed hindlimbs that were relatively much shorter; hence the 'intermediate' humerofemoral index of AL 288-1 (85.1) compared with Homo sapiens and great apes. It follows that relative and absolute elongation of the hindlimbs represents one of the major evolutionary changes in later human evolution. The bodily proportions of Lucy are not incompatible with some form of bipedal locomotion, but kinematic identity and functional equivalence with the bipedal gait of modern humans seem highly improbable. Reduced relative stride length in AL 288-1 probably implies both greater relative energy cost and relatively lower peak velocities of bipedal locomotion in A. afarensis.
Daraus:
It is demonstrated that A. afarensis possessed anatomic characteristics that indicate a significant adaptation for movement in the trees. Other structural features point to a mode of terrestrial bipedality that involved less extension at the hip and knee than occurs in modern humans, and only limited transfer of weight onto the medial part of the ball of the foot, but such conclusions remain more tentative than that asserting substantive arboreality. A comparison of the specimens representing smaller individuals, presumably female, to those of larger individuals, presumably male, suggests sexual differences in locomotor behavior linked to marked size dimorphism. The males were probably less arboreal and engaged more frequently in terrestrial bipedalism. In our opinion, A. afarensis from Hadar [Anm.: aka Lucy] is very close to what can be called a "missing link." We speculate that earlier representatives of the A. afarensis lineage will present not a combination of arboreal and bipedal traits, but rather the anatomy of a generalized ape.

The wrong Georgia on their mind...

Jennifer Bray

RTé has admitted making a serious blunder after an RTÉ.ie news bulletin on the conflict between Georgia and Russia used a map of the US state of Georgia instead.

An RTÉ spokeswoman said: "There was an incorrect map displayed on the RTÉ website last night of Georgia. The problem was identified as a human error and occurred online. It was rectified within the hour."

The mistake occurs amid a recent string of criticisms for errors on the website from users. The slip-up is sure to be of embarrassment to the broadcaster due to the high profile nature of the article.

Outtake.

Design of Life (einer von O'Leary's Blogs): Okay, what's confirmation bias?

Mathis
: Every scientist and journalist should be forced to take a class on confirmation bias. It means saying, I'm right! This is the way it is! Why are you questioning me? A lot of people in science and medicine are completely unaware of the fact that they need to protect themselves from it, or else they don't even try.

I also found that in interviewing scientists [Anm.: für Expelled] who were not biologists, I was quite surprised at their lack of understanding of biology. I incorrectly assumed that they would actually know, but they did not. Yet they are absolutely convinced that this is the truth. [S. 68]
A lot of people in science and medicine are completely unaware of the fact that they need to protect themselves from it?

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!

It is a sign of how seriously Americans take religion that the first general-election meeting between Barack Obama and John McCain will take place not in a university auditorium, with network news anchors as moderators, but in the sanctuary of an Evangelical megachurch with a Southern Baptist pastor playing the role of interrogator. For two hours on Saturday evening, the two presumptive presidential nominees will field questions on policy issues, character and faith (consecutively, not debating each other) from Rick Warren at his Saddleback Church in Orange County, Calif.

Oder eigentlich deprimiert es mich nur.

“We think space and time are important because that’s the kind of monkeys we are.”

The experiment shows that in quantum mechanics at least, some things transcend space-time, says Terence Rudolph, a theorist at Imperial College London. It also shows that humans have attached undue importance to the three dimensions of space and one of time we live in, he argues. “We think space and time are important because that’s the kind of monkeys we are.”

If you are baffled by the result, fear not — you’re not alone. “For me, honestly, it doesn’t make any sense,” says Gisin [einer der Autoren der Studie]. “I don’t think we can today claim that we have a good story to tell how this all happens.”

This is alarming!! Millions of people who use internet to search for alternative medicine are being systematically exposed to anti-CAM data. At the time when the world is rushing towards alternative medicine, the effort to sabotage the alternative medicine cannot be ignored.

The Wikipedia articles on CAM are not a true knowledge-base about any CAM therapy. It is primarily a place to post what CAM is not!!

Wikipedia is a wonderful tool and we are not against Wikipedia in any way. It is the quality of content about CAM therapies and undue skeptical intervention at Wikipedia, that has led us to create a secure environment for the CAM therapies in the form of wiki4cam.org.
Yes! This is why we need a place where the CAM community can build its own knowledge base without the undue interference of skeptics. We need a place where the CAM practitioners themselves write articles and create a true picture of its history, development, efficacy and positive research.

The CAM community needs to come together to create exhaustive articles about each CAM therapy. Hpathy.com will work to optimize the Wiki4CAM content so that the Wiki4CAM pages rank in the top 10 in all search results. We need to make our side of story available too.

This wiki is open ONLY to CAM practitioners. Wiki4CAM is technically supported by Hpathy.com, world's leading homeopathy portal and we will try to ensure that this wiki gives the CAM community the most conducive atmosphere for creating its knowledge base. We strongly discourage skeptics from registering here. Anybody found posting any anti-CAM data will be quickly removed.
Skepticism is usually defined as "an attitude of doubt or a disposition to incredulity either in general or toward a particular object"

The attitude of inquiry is necessary for the scientific progress of any stream of knowledge. To have doubts about something is also normal and acceptable. Every one of us can be skeptical about certain things and we are not against skeptical enquiry in general. BUT very often skepticism leads to vandalism. Your disbelief in something (which can arise from a lack of knowledge) often leads to disrespect. To question the scientific plausibility of some CAM practice by those who have studied and practiced it is one thing, to nullify a CAM therapy or practice by reading a few articles online is entirely another.

LOL!
This article has no basis in science. You can help Wiki4CAM by inventing one for it.
Wundervoll.

Das dritte Kapitel: The surprising truth' (Forts.)

So again it is probable, from what we know of the embryos of mammals, birds, fishes, and reptiles, that these animals are the modified descendants of some ancient progenitor, which was furnished in its adult state with branchiæ, a swim-bladder, four fin-like limbs, and a long tail, all fitted for an aquatic life.
[p. 395]
Thus, community in embryonic structure reveals community of descent; but dissimilarity in embryonic development does not prove discommunity of descent, for in one of two groups the developmental stages may have been suppressed, or may have been so greatly modified through adaptation to new habits of life, as to be no longer recognisable. [p. 396]

As the embryo often shows us more or less plainly the structure of the less modified and ancient progenitor of the group, we can see why ancient and extinct forms so often resemble in their adult state the embryos of existing species of the same class. Agassiz believes this to be a universal law of nature; and we may hope hereafter to see the law proved true. It can, however, be proved true only in those cases in which the ancient state of the progenitor of the group has not been wholly obliterated, either by successive variations having supervened at a very early period of growth, or by such variations having been inherited at an earlier age than that at which they first appeared. [p. 396]

So, kommen wir nun zum spaßigen Teil. Was schreiben den unsere beiden Clowns dazu?
Darwin claimed to find remarkable similarities between how the embryos of different species developed. [...] But Darwin was not an expert in embryology. As a result, he drew his evidence from others. He relied especially on Ernst Haeckel, a German biologist. Haeckel reasoned that the development of embryos in the womb (or egg) mirrors the larger evolutionary process of nature. In other words, an individual embryo will develop in a pattern similar to the evolutionary development of a species.
For instance, because humans are thought to have evolved from fish, a human embryo might develop as a fish before developing obviously human characteristics. Darwin found this pattern so convincing that he said, "It is probable, from what we know of the embryos of mammals, birds, fishes and reptiles, that these animals are the modified descendants of some ancient progenitor."
To make his point, Haeckel made drawings of various embryos such as chickens, frogs, and fish. He wanted to show that the early embryos of different species look very much the same but then become noticeably different as they develop. His drawings had a great influence on popular culture because they were reprinted many times.
Even though Haeckel's drawings still appear in some textbooks today, it has been known for over a century that they were faked. Yes, faked! Haeckel cherry-picked his examples, and even then he still had to exaggerate similarities. Rather than representing embryonic development accurately, Haeckel skewed his drawings to fit his theory. [S. 57/58]

Haeckel's ABC of evolution and development. Biol.

There is no highly conserved embryonic stage in the vertebrates: implications for current theories of evolution and development. Anat Embryol 196: 91–106]:
For example, von Baer (1828) argued that the embryos of different amniotes often appear strikingly similar, and that many differences among the adults of different species arise at later stages of development. The gradual appearance during development of differences among embryos is known as divergence or deviation (de Beer 1951). Haeckel took this idea further and suggested that essentially all differences among species arise at late stages, and that embryos are therefore virtually identical. This was famously depicted in his drawings (Fig. 2) which purport to show different species arising from a conserved embryonic stage (Haeckel 1874). The drawings were intended to demonstrate Haeckel’s recapitulation theory or biogenetic law. A conserved stage was a necessary part of this theory because evolution was claimed to progress principally by the terminal addition of new adult stages to the end of ancestral developmental sequences.
Haeckel’s ideas soon came in for strong criticism. His drawings are also highly inaccurate, exaggerating the similarities among embryos, while failing to show the differences (Sedgwick 1894; Richardson 1995; Raff 1996).

So again it is probable, from what we know of the embryos of mammals, birds, fishes, and reptiles, that these animals are the modified descendants of some ancient progenitor, which was furnished in its adult state with branchiæ [= Kiemen], a swim-bladder, four fin-like limbs, and a long tail, all fitted for an aquatic life.

The actual embryonic evidence is quite different from what Darwin had hoped: Vertebrate embryos do not look very similar in the early stages and then begin to differ in the later stages [Anm.: Ich wette, Dembski fühlte sich ganz warm und wohlig innen drin, nachdem er sich das aus den Fingern gesogen hatte.]. Haeckel and Darwin took the most similar stages and arbitrarily consideres them the "first" stages of development [Anm.: Gelogen, jedenfalls was Darwin angeht. When the actual first stages of embryonic development are considered, their evidence collapses – the embryos start out very different. [S. 58]
On a fundamental level, Haeckel was correct: All vertebrates develop a similar body plan (consisting of notochord, body segments, pharyngeal pouches, and so forth). This shared developmental program reflects shared evolutionary history. It also fits with overwhelming recent evidence that development in different animals is controlled by common genetic mechanisms.
[Quelle: Richardson et al.(1998). Letter to Science. Science 280(5366): 983]

Unsere Lügenbarone fahren fort:
Even though scientists know that the earliest stages of embryological development are not the most similar ones, the drawings are still in use in many textbooks today (many others use carefully selected but still misleading photos [Anm.: JA KLAR! When confronted with these facts, many Darwinist admit that the drawings may have been faked [Anm.: ARGH!] but insist that that's okay because they illustrate a "deeper truth" about evolution.

If you took your DNA and inserted it into a human egg that had its own DNA removed, you would not have an exact (although younger) replica of yourself. How your "clone" looked would depend not only on the DNA but also on the information in the enucleated egg that received your DNA.
If DNA does not solely determine the development of an organism, is it possible for a new species to emerge through mutations in existing DNA? A recent proposal by Darwinists says "yes": "Evo-devo," a shortened name for evolutionary developmental biology - looks to genes in early development to determine if the right mutations in them could lead to macroevolutionary change. According to evo-devo, the right mutation early in the development of an organism might lead to major changes later on – perhaps even to the development of a new species. [S. 59/60]
Was wollen sie uns damit sagen?

The problem for evo-devo is that mutations in developmental genes never benefit the organism and are almost always harmful.
Biologists have found that mutations in developmental genes often lead to death and deformity. Evo-devo experts work a lot with fruit flies. Tweaking one developmental gene in a fruit fly can lead to an extra set of wings. Unfortunately, those wings don't have muscles and are therefore worse than useless – they make it harder for the fly to fly.
So is this the mechanism that can account for Darwinian evolution? No. As Jonathan Wells explains, "All of the evidence points to one conclusion: no matter what we do to a fruit fly embryo, there are only three possible outcomes – a normal fruit fly, a defective fruit fly, or a dead fruit fly. Not even a horsefly, much less a horse." [S. 60]
Geeeeenau.

Mutations have sometimes led to minor changes within a species – such as bacteria and insecticide resistance – but there are no known cases where such mutations have produced large scale changes that benefit an organism, let alone the development of a new species. Mutations may help bacteria survive (microevolution), but they are incapable of producing any kind of new species, much less transform a cow into a whale or a dinosaur into a bird (macroevolution). [S. 60/61]
Um Tantalus Prime zu paraphrasieren:
Mr. Dembski has the experience necessary to write something not just stupid, but so mind-numbingly stupid that it makes you want to remove all the Brodmann areas [siehe Abbildung] from your brain in numerical order with a grapefruit spoon just so that you will never again have to comprehend something so wrong.

HIV is short for human immunodeficiency virus, which is thought to be the cause of AIDS. [S. 61]
Thought to be? Vielleicht bin ich ja übermäßig empfindlich, aber im Hinblick darauf, dass Dembskis Kumpel Jonathan Wells, in diesem Kapitel vier Mal zitiert (zwei Mal ihr gemeinsames Machwerk 'Design of Life', zwei Mal Wells 'The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design') ein HIV-Leugner ist, kann man da schon mal hellhörig werden:
Hence we see something of an unusual alliance between the right and the left, strangely reminiscent of the alliance formed to attack the theory of evolution. So it should come as no surprise that some leading lights of anti-evolution Intelligent Design theory, including ID godfather Phillip Johnson and Moonie Jonathan Wells, have joined the AIDS denialist camp.
Indeed, Johnson has even co-authored denialist papers with Kary Mullis, though one has to wonder how he squares Mullis's admittedly bohemian lifestyle -- Mullis has reportedly slept with more women than the Rolling Stones and claims the inspiration for PCR came during an LSD trip -- with his own hellfire Presbyterianism.
[Quelle: The Vancouver Sun, ' Aids 'denialism' gathers strange bedfellows'.]

Mein "Best-of":

Nr. 1:
HIV is a virus [Anm.: Das ist tatsächlich richtig!!11!!!!1!!one!]. As such, it contains far less genetic information than a cell and therefore mutates extraordinarily quickly. [S. 62]

Nr. 2:
The HIV virus has not undergone the breathtaking changes we should expect if natural selection were as powerful as Darwin claimed. [S. 62]
[T]he strength of selection observed in the wild, when extrapolated over long periods, is more than adequate to explain the diversification of life on Earth. [S. 61]
Nr. 3:
HIV functions exactly as it did when first discovered roughly 50 years ago. Although minor changes within HIV have enabled it to resist certain drugs, nothing fundamentally new has emerged. [S. 62]
Gelogen.

Fertig?

Ok, here comes.
To appreciate the true state of Darwinism, imagine what would happen to the germ theory of disease if scientists never found any microorganism or viruses that produced diseases. Obviously, it would be abandoned! Evolutionists have proposed mechanisms to explain small-scale changes in organims (like HIV developing anti-viral resistance [Anm.: Argh. Das allein tut schon weh. HIV entwickelt keine Resistenz gegen Viren, sondern gegen antivirale Medikamente, aber gut, was will man erwarten.]). They have not shown how such mechanism can reasonably be extrapolated to explain large-scale changes in organisms, such as bacteria developing the omplex molecular machines we will explore in chapter 8 [Anm.: Ich muss mich möglicherweise vorher erschießen.]. They offer many just-so stories but no detailed, testable models for how it could be done. Without such models, Darwinism is dead in the water. [S. 62/63]

It has already been stated that various parts in the same individual which are exactly alike during an early embryonic period, become widely different and serve for widely different purposes in the adult state. So again it has been shown that generally the embryos of the most distinct species belonging to the same class are closely similar, but become, when fully developed, widely dissimilar. A better proof of this latter fact cannot be given than the statement by Von Baer that "the embryos of mammalia, of birds, lizards, and snakes, probably also of chelonia, are in their earliest states exceedingly like one another, both as a whole and in the mode of development of their parts; so much so, in fact, that we can often distinguish the embryos only by their size. In my possession are two little embryos in spirit, whose names I have omitted to attach, and at present I am quite unable to say to what class they belong. They may be lizards or small birds, or very young mammalia, so complete is the similarity in the mode of formation of the head and trunk in these animals. The extremities, however, are still absent in these embryos. But even if they had existed in the earliest stage of their development we should learn nothing, for the feet of lizards and mammals, the wings and feet of birds, no less than the hands and feet of man, all arise from the same fundamental form."
[...]
A trace of the law of embryonic resemblance occasionally lasts till a rather late age: thus birds of the same genus, and of allied genera, often resemble each other in their immature plumage; as we see in the spotted feathers in the young of the thrush group. In the cat tribe, most of the species when adult are striped or spotted in lines; and stripes or spots can be plainly distinguished in the whelp of the lion and the puma. We occasionally though rarely see something of the same kind in plants; thus the first leaves of the ulex or furze, and the first leaves of the phyllodineous acacias, are pinnate or divided like the ordinary leaves of the leguminosæ. [pp. 387/388]
The points of structure, in which the embryos of widely different animals within the same class resemble each other, often have no direct relation to their conditions of existence. We cannot, for instance, suppose that in the embryos of the vertebrata the peculiar loop-like courses of the arteries near the branchial slits are related to similar conditions,—in the young mammal which is nourished in the womb of its mother, in the egg of the bird which is hatched in a nest, and in the spawn of a frog under water. We have no more reason to believe in such a relation, than we have to believe that the similar bones in the hand of a man, wing of a bat, and fin of a porpoise, are related to similar conditions of life. No one supposes that the stripes on the whelp of a lion, or the spots on the young blackbird, are of any use to these animals. [p. 388]
We are so much accustomed to see a difference in structure between the embryo and the adult, that we are tempted to look at this difference as in some necessary manner contingent on growth. But there is no reason why, for instance, the wing of a bat, or the fin of a porpoise, should not have been sketched out with all their parts in proper proportion, as soon as any part became visible. [p. 390]
How, then, can we explain these several facts in embryology,—namely, the very general, though not universal, difference in structure between the embryo and the adult;—the various parts in the same individual embryo, which ultimately become very unlike and serve for diverse purposes, being at an early period of growth alike;—the common, but not invariable, resemblance between the embryos or larvæ of the most distinct species in the same class;—the embryo often retaining whilst within the egg or womb, structures which are of no service to it, either at that or at a later period of life; on the other hand larvæ, which have to provide for their own wants, being perfectly adapted to the surrounding conditions;—and lastly the fact of certain larvæ standing higher in the scale of organisation than the mature animal into which they are developed? I believe that all these facts can be explained, as follows.
[pp. 390/391]

Let us take a group of birds, descended from some ancient form and modified through natural selection for different habits. Then, from the many slight successive variations having supervened in the several species at a not early age, and having been inherited at a corresponding age, the young will have been but little modified, and they will still resemble each other much more closely than do the adults,—just as we have seen with the breeds of the pigeon. We may extend this view to widely distinct structures and to whole classes. The fore-limbs, for instance, which once served as legs to a remote progenitor, may have become, through a long course of modification, adapted in one descendant to act as hands, in another as paddles, in another as wings; but on the above two principles the fore-limbs will not have been much modified in the embryos of these several forms; although in each form the fore-limb will differ greatly in the adult state. [p. 393]

From the remarks just made we can see how by changes of structure in the young, in conformity with changed habits of life, together with inheritance at corresponding ages, animals might come to pass through stages of development, perfectly distinct from the primordial condition of their adult progenitors. Most of our best authorities are now convinced that the various larval and pupal stages of insects have thus been acquired through adaptation, and not through inheritance from some ancient form. The curious case of Sitaris—a beetle which passes through certain unusual stages of development—will illustrate how this might occur. [...] Now, if an insect, undergoing transformations like those of the Sitaris, were to become the progenitor of a whole new class of insects, the course of development of the new class would be widely different from that of our existing insects; and the first larval stage certainly would not represent the former condition of any adult and ancient form.
On the other hand it is highly probable that with many animals the embryonic or larval stages show us, more or less completely, the condition of the progenitor of the whole group in its adult state. In the great class of the Crustacea, forms wonderfully distinct from each other, namely, suctorial parasites, cirripedes, entomostraca, and even the malacostraca, appear at first as larvæ under the nauplius-form; and as these larvæ live and feed in the open sea, and are not adapted for any peculiar habits of life, and from other reasons assigned by Fritz Müller, it is probable that at some very remote period an independent adult animal, resembling the Nauplius, existed, and subsequently produced, along several divergent lines of descent, the above-named great Crustacean groups.
As all the organic beings, extinct and recent, which have ever lived, can be arranged within a few great classes; and as all within each class have, according to our theory, been connected together by fine gradations, the best, and, if our collections were nearly perfect, the only possible arrangement, would be genealogical; descent being the hidden bond of connexion which naturalists have been seeking under the term of the Natural System. On this view we can understand how it is that, in the eyes of most naturalists, the structure of the embryo is even more important for classification than that of the adult. In two or more groups of animals, however much they may differ from each other in structure and habits in their adult condition, if they pass through closely similar embryonic stages, we may feel assured that they all are descended from one parent-form, and are therefore closely related. Even in groups, in which the adults have been modified to an extreme degree, community of origin is often revealed by the structure of the larvæ; we have seen, for instance, that cirripedes, though externally so like shell-fish, are at once known by their larvæ to belong to the great class of crustaceans. It should also be borne in mind, that the law may be true, but yet, owing to the geological record not extending far enough back in time, may remain for a long period, or for ever, incapable of demonstration. The law will not strictly hold good in those cases in which an ancient form became adapted in its larval state to some special line of life, and transmitted the same larval state to a whole group of descendants; for such larvæ will not resemble any still more ancient form in its adult state.
Thus, as it seems to me, the leading facts in embryology, which are second to none in importance, are explained on the principle of variations in the many descendants from some one ancient progenitor, having appeared at a not very early period of life, and having been inherited at a corresponding period. Embryology rises greatly in interest, when we look at the embryo as a picture, more or less obscured, of the progenitor, either in its adult or larval state, of all the members of the same great class. [pp. 394-396]
What can be more curious than the presence of teeth in fœtal whales, which when grown up have not a tooth in their heads; or the teeth, which never cut through the gums, in the upper jaws of unborn calves? [p. 397]

"Bible" stands for "Basic Instruction Before Leaving Earth".

Von der Channel 4-Website zu 'Make me a Christian':

The Reverend George Hargreaves thinks Britain is in a state of moral decline and that a return to a more 'Christian' way of life would stop the rot. He and his team of mentors aim to show how by convincing a group of non-Christian volunteers to live by the teachings of the Bible for three weeks.

In this three-part series, a group of volunteers from around Leeds in West Yorkshire give up their normal lives and attempt to live like Christians for three weeks. [...]

First stop is York Minster - an awe-inspiring cathedral that's almost 1,000 years old, where they are asked to participate in a communion service. Then it's back to Leeds, where George Hargreaves gives each volunteer a Bible and asks them to read some every day.

The mentors visit the volunteers in their own homes, to get a picture of their lives and to give them guidance. The parents are asked to spend 15 minutes each day with their children. The lesbian is ordered to get rid of her explicit pictures and books. The young man and his pregnant girlfriend are given some instruction in the basics of Christianity. The lap-dancing manager is discovered to have more than a passing interest in witchcraft and magic - her books and ceremonial paraphernalia are taken away. The womanising 20-something is persuaded to agree not to 'look lustfully at a girl'. The biker, so far, is challenging every instruction and the others are beginning to get fed up with his refusal to listen.

All this is just the start of their three hard weeks. Can they embrace Christian ideals and learn to live in a different way or will their old lives prove just too strong to resist?

In true oversimplified TV-conflict tradition, it's a clash of absurd extremities. The Christians, for instance, consist of an evangelical preacher, a lady vicar, a Catholic priest and - very much heading up the pack - the Reverend George Hargreaves, founder of Operation Christian Vote, and the Christian Party, and the Scottish Christian Party, and the Welsh Christian Party. If it's Christian and a Party, chances are George is its figurehead. He scatters Christian joy like a muckspreader flings shit: indiscriminately and everywhere.

Said Christians are pitted against a group of volunteers containing the following widely representative social types: a lesbian schoolteacher, a tattooed militant atheist biker, a white Muslim convert, a boozing fannyhound who claims to have slept with over 150 women, and a lapdancing witch. Nice work, C4. I'm sure we can all learn from this. Let battle commence.

Following a trip to York Minster, George hands each of the volunteers a Bible. The word "Bible", he tells them, stands for "Basic Instruction Before Leaving Earth". He instructs them to read it every day. This makes the atheist biker kick off, so George graciously talks over him until he walks out.

The group seems pleased to see biker boy go. After all, what's the point of participating if you're not prepared to learn? As William (the Muslim convert) says, "Step one to learning is silence, and step two is listening." Step three, presumably, is absolute cocksucking obedience - or it would be if cocksucking wasn't a sin.

Almost any form of sex is a sin. Take Fay, the occult lapdancer. George takes one look at her lifestyle (spangly bras and tarot cards) and announces she's "on a trajectory to hell". Sobbing, Fay slinks away to her boyfriend's house for a few days of comforting. When she emerges later, George bollocks her for having sex outside marriage. "While the world might call it 'making love'," he says, "the Bible calls it fornication."

[...]

With his polarising views and divisive political campaigning, George is just the man to be fronting a makeover show, and the broadcast will doubtless be accompanied by the percussive sound of thousands of Christians enthusiastically smashing their foreheads against the wall with delight at the way they're represented. Still, let's not blame Channel 4. Let's forgive them. Just like Jesus'n stuff, yeah?
